Finlayson Arms Hotel.

Coylton, Ayr.

In the News 1971...

Billy McNeill gets hotel licence.

Although there was no formal objection to the transfer to Celtic's Billy McNeill of the licence of the Finlayson Arms Hotel, Coylton at Ayr District Licensing Court to-day concern was expressed about the intended change of name.

Mr. McNeill wants to call the premises Coylton Hotel so that it can be better identified with the district, but the proprietrix of the Coylton Arms. Mrs. Margaret Skilling, through an agent, said that this could cause confusion.

"While we welcome Billy McNeill, who comes to Coylton with a great and glorious reputation as a sportsman, the Coylton Arms has an even longer reputation going back to the time of Burns," said the agent.

No home change.

For many years the Coylton Arms had had a lounge known as the Trysting Thorn and it was understood that McNeill intended to use the same name for one of his lounges. Mr McNeill's agent intervened to say that there was no intension to change the name of any lounge at the Finlayson Arms. Mrs. Skilling's agent suggested that he should have talks with Mr. McNeill and his agent on this matter.

This was accepted and the transfer was unanimously granted. Willie Henderson, Rangers' international winger, was to-day granted a licence for a public house in Main Street, Chapelhall, by no. 2 Hamilton District County of Lanark Licensing Court.
