Gaiety

The Gaiety. 1960s.

The Gaiety was opened in 1962 by West of Scotland Taverns Ltd. Mr Joseph M Smillie was licensee. Mr Duthie, managing director of J & R Tennent Ltd, presided at the opening ceremony which was performed by Mrs J S Young, daughter of Mr J W MacFarlane, a past president of the Glasgow and District Licensed Trade Defence Association.

Mr Duthie remarked at the opening that the work began on the premises eight months ago and asked Mrs Young to perform the opening ceremony by cutting the ribbon.

The new premises were the most up-to-date in the area having a new lounge bar, main bar, off-sales and a large function suite upstairs for weddings, dinner dances, private functions and banquets.

Two years later the Gaiety was under threat of being closed down along with three other premises in the Craigton Area, by the licensing board, however the new Gaiety was saved, but the old Half Way House was not so lucky and was demolished.

In the NEWS 1977...

A warm welcome at the Gaiety.

Things are hotting up at the old Gaiety Function Rooms at 2397 Paisley Road West in Glasgow, since Tuesday, that is, when the former brewery owned property re-opened as an Indian restaurant.

New occupants, Mr Sharma, has decided to retain the old Gaiety name, spicing up the eating habits of that particular neck of the woods, but retaining the upstairs function room for wedding receptions, dinner dances, and all other types of special occasions.

In fact, The Gaiety brings a welcome taste to the east as it is the first Indian restaurant in the area. It also has the only function rooms.

DISHES

Mr Sharma is pleased with the response to the function rooms, and reports that bookings are fairly full for the next year. With a capacity of 150 and attractive surroundings, the popularity is easy to comprehend.

The restaurant has a full range of Indian and European dishes. To some people food is all-important when enjoying a night out. To others the music may be the main consideration, and to many it is the ambience which really counts.

Places that excel in all three are rare, but the Gaiety is one. They serve cuisine to satisfy the most discerning of palates in a delightful setting. There are several outstanding dishes on the menu, but Mr Sharma does not like to class them as specialities.

"We do not like to call any dish specialities," he said. "We like to think that all our dishes are a little bit special, and that our customers are a little bit special too,"

I settled on the Chicken Biryani, full of flavour with succulent pieces of chicken. Proceeded, of course, by the obligatory-for-me portion of hot and crispy Pakora.

BARGAIN

The restaurant has no drinks licence at the moment, but it's a situation that Mr Sharma hopes to remedy in the near future.

If you're caught up in the hustle and bustle of work, or perhaps can't dine out until later in the afternoon, don't worry if you think that you will miss out on the gaiety's special economy lunch menu.

You won't, because Mr Sharma has extended the hours for this tasty bargain from 12-5 p.m. A full carry-out service is available from the Gaiety, which is open six days a week, no Sunday, until 11.30 in the evening.

So if you are looking for a night-out, or perhaps are organising a special function, pop along to pay a visit to The Gaiety. Mr Sharma will have a warm welcome waiting for you.
