In the News 1973...

Another look into pub row.

The planning Committee of Glasgow Corporation is to have another look at the controversial Lord Darnley pub development in Pollokshields.

The planning sub-committee had recommended that planning permission in retrospect should be given for extensions already carried out in the public house.

The Lord Darnley pub in Pollokshields is owned by Celtic manager Jock Stein, James Gordon, managing director of Radio Clyde and former STV commentator, and John Dunne, former Labour councillor for Maryhill.

The controversy arose over an unauthorised extension which contained a restaurant and bar and cost £12,500.

Tittle-tattle

When this unauthorised extension was discovered the owners were told they must put in a planning application seeking permission in retrospect.

At the planning committee today, Councillor Donald McColl told members he felt this matter should go back to the sub-committee and hoped his suggestion would be accepted. The proposal was agreed to unanimously.

Later, Councillor McColl gave the explanation, "I wanted another look at this because of everything that has been said about it. It needs further consideration and the whole situation needs to be clarified. "There have been a lot of things said and there has been a great deal of tittle-tattle since the recommendation to approve was made by the sub-committee.

"In the light of all the claptrap that has been said it is necessary we look at the application once more."
