After a long faithful service with the Gartsherrie Co-operative in the wine and spirit department, Mr Maxwell set up business for himself and took over the Horse Shoe Restaurant, Coatbridge after three and a half years he expanded his horizons and went into the hotel business. The Horse Shoe was a great place that gained the reputation of holding some of the best parties, marriages, suppers, and private social meetings in the whole of Coatbridge.

He annexed the Royal Hotel on a 15 years lease at a cost of over £1,500 and added certain extensive alterations making it a fine hostelry for tourists and commercial travelers with carriage hiring, stabling and a first class dining facilities. This old hotel was formerly known as the Coatbridge Inn.
